The Hanging Stones are a one of a series of gritstone crags lining the northern edge of Birk Gill, a side valley of Colsterdale, west of Masham.
The Hanging Stones are the furthest west of four named crags, the other being Lobley Crags, Brown Beck Crags and Slipstone Crags. While the latter in particular are very popular with climbers few climbers, let alone walkers, make their way this far up the valley of Birk Gill.
Whilst they are more a scattering of large rocks than a defined crag. Not being a climber I can’t pass judgement on their potential in that regard but they are good fun to explore and there are a few good rocks for posing for a picture on.
