Great Wegber

Great Wegber

Great Wegber is, along with the likes of Ellerkin Scar and Ivy Scar, one of a number of impressive limestone scars that look down on Wensleydale from the north.

Great Wegber is located above the small village of Carperby and to the west of Castle Bolton. The easiest way to reach Great Wegber is near the top of Peatmoor Lane, a track that leads on to Greenhaw Hut on the moors beyond.

An alternative approach is from the east passing by Locker Tarn. There is no path but it is an interesting route featuring not only Locker Tarn but also a small waterfall just above the tarn.

Similarly there is no path along the rim of Great Wegber but there is no need for one. Carefully following the edge is great fun, in one place it is almost dead straight. The views of Wensleydale from Great Wegber are also rather good though not quite as fine as those from Ivy Scar and Ellerkin Scar further to the west.
