Aberdene Tarn

Aberdene Tarn

Aberdene Tarn is a tiny tarn located on Whitaside Moor to the west of Pickerstone Ridge. It is quite possibly the smallest tarn in the Yorkshire Dales that is named on the OS Explorer or Landranger maps.

The tarn sits near an angle in the fence on the broad ridge of moorland separating Swaledale and Wensleydale. It can be reached either by following the fence west from the top of Apedale Head or from the Askrigg to Grinton road utilising for part of the way a shooter’s track alongside Hooker Gill.

Either of these routes are ultimately pathless so in poor weather following the fence from Apedale Head is the better option. The tarn is hidden until almost the last moment. Indeed when I visited for the first time I was beginning to think it had dried up until it suddenly appeared when I was about 10m away.
