Side Well Tarn is a small reedy tarn which is located in a hollow just north of the Stake Road, a track leading on to Stake Fell from Thoralby.
Side Well Tarn is just over 500ft from the Stake Road so it is an easy detour on grass to visit if you are passing along the track. The tarn is surrounded by small clumps of reeds.
On the east side of the tarns is a wooden shooting butt. Presumably this sees little use as the inside of it is full of nettles. To the south-west of the tarn is a large wooden hut which looks reasonably maintained though I didn’t bother investigating more closely.
