Whitaside Tarn

Whitaside Tarn

Whitaside Tarn is a medium sized tarn that is situated on Whitaside Moor above the Askrigg to Grinton road as it drops down into Swaledale.

It is the largest of a number of tarns scattered about the moor though, apart from the tiny Aberdene Tarn, Whitaside Tarn is the only one named on the OS Explorer map.

The most direct route to the tarn is by using the shooters track that goes up alongside Hooker Gill from the Askrigg road. At the top of the track are some grouse butts which, if followed lead to the outflow from the tarn.

An alternative route, that also includes Aberdene Tarn and Spring Ridge Tarn, is to follow the fence west from the top of Apedale Head. At the fence on Spring Ridge, with its small tarn on the south side of the fence, turn north. Whitaside Tarn should be seen ahead and can be reached via a fairly easy, though pathless walk, through the heather.
