Catrake Force is one of a number of named waterfalls situated close to the village of Keld, the waterfall capital of Swaledale.
Of all the waterfalls in the area Catrake Force is the nearest to Keld and the Ordnance Survey’s OL30 Explorer map highlights Catrake Force with a blue star to represent it being a tourist feature. The irony is that it isn’t actually that easy to see and most pictures you will see named as Catrake Force on the internet are actually of East Gill Force. This case of mistaken identity is probably because East Gill Force is not named on the map despite it being a highly popular and accessible waterfall situated right alongside the Pennine Way.
Catrake Force itself is rather hidden away in the gorge below Keld. To visit it you need to follow the track down into the campsite from the back of the car park in Keld. A thin path then heads downstream where a restricted view can be had of two of Catrake Force’s drops.
