Located in the wooded gill just above the famous Hardraw Force, the Shaw Gill Falls are a series of modest but attractive little waterfalls.
Although a lot of people visit Hardraw Force, and pay for the pleasure, a lot fewer venture into nearby Shaw Gill. It is a shame that the path from Hardraw up into Shaw Gill is closed. This means that one has to go round, via the field path climbing up from Hardraw to Simonstone, and then a couple of minutes along the road, to reach the path dropping down into Shaw Gill.
There are three main waterfalls, the lower one is shown above and on the main page image. There is a path running along both sides of the stream. Two footbridges help to create a lovely little loop which allows both the lower and middle falls to be seen from both banks.
A third waterfall lies just above the upper footbridge. While it can be seen from the footbridge a path continues on the right hand side looking upstream. Walking up this path allows a much closer look than that afforded from the footbridge.
