Hell Gill Force is a superb waterfall that is located on Hell Gill in the upper Eden valley in an area more commonly known as Mallerstang.
Some websites claim that Hell Gill Force is the highest waterfall on the River Eden. I’m not sure about this as the Eden proper is not formed until Hell Gill’s confluence with Ais Gill further downstream.
Regardless Hell Gill Force is a superb waterfall and moreover one that is relatively easy to access, it being only a few minutes walk from the roadside on a good track. The waterfall is located just beneath a ford that cross the stream above.
The waterfall is surrounded by a precipitous drop and care needs to be taken around the edges. I’ve seen photos of the waterfall taken from below at stream level. On my last visit I didn’t see any obvious way down and can only assume that people descend further downstream before walking back up to the waterfall.
